Kitchen Trends for 2024
We’ve all heard the saying that the kitchen is the heart of the home, often being the place for gatherings with family and friends. It’s also one of the most expensive renovations a homeowner can undertake. As their contractor, knowing the current trends can them make informed design decisions. Check out some of the trends that you can expect as we enter the new year:
Going Green – Literally & Figuratively
Just like with bathrooms, green is expected to be a big color in 2024. From walls to cabinets to countertops, expect to see more of this color this year. Many homeowners are also looking for sustainable options when it comes to their kitchen. According to NBKA’s 2024 Kitchen Design Trends Report, 51% of customers surveyed are looking for long-lasting products and 44% want to donate their old cabinets. Plus, 53% want space for recycling in their kitchens and 23% want storage for composting.
Space to Store
Homeowners want their kitchens to be as functionable as possible. This means plenty of space to store all the odds and ends a kitchen entails. Examples of this include appliance garages, hidden drawers, charging drawers, hidden pet storage and more. On the more high-end side of things, butler pantries and prep kitchens have seen an uptick in popularity. The more that can be hidden away, the more the design of the kitchen can truly shine.
Herringbone Heaven
On both the floor and backsplash, expect to see more of this pattern. However, you may also see a slight twist with homeowners leaning towards a vertical or diagonal layout. Mitchell Parker, the senior editor of Houzz, says “herringbone is another classic design element that is experiencing a renaissance, becoming the go-to pattern for kitchens, bathrooms, and more.”
Return of Natural Wood
While white kitchens still have their place, more and more homeowners are opting for natural wood cabinets. “I think a balance of painted and wood cabinetry is really important,” says Ashley Macuga, principal designer of Collected Interiors. “Color can provide a space with personality and charm, and stained woods give a space a feeling of warmth and depth.”
Layered Lighting
With so much going on in the kitchen, homeowners want a variety of lighting options. As opposed to large pendant or overhead lights, more subtle options are rising in popularity. Sconces are a great alternative as well as under-cabinet and cove lighting. According to the Kitchen Design Trends Report, other types of functional lighting include ambient lighting for mood, statement lighting for design, and nighttime lighting for safety.
