How the Right Subcontractors Give You a Competitive Edge

You already know that offering a choice of payment options, garnering positive customer reviews, and establishing customer trust are all important for closing more sales and securing larger projects. But did you know that working with great subcontractors can give you a competitive edge?

Here’s what you need to know when working with subcontractors:

Know Who Your Subcontractors Are

A remodel can come with its fair share of stress for a homeowner, so your potential customers are looking for a remodeling contractor who’ll provide a pleasant, worry-free customer experience. When the project is complete, it’s the entire customer experience that can encourage or discourage referrals and recommendations. As a home improvement contractor, you can fulfill every promise and expectation on your end, but if your subcontractors aren’t up to snuff, it can reflect poorly on your reputation. (That’s what the pundits call “bad optics” these days.)

Be sure to conduct extensive research into who your subcontractors are. This includes their reputations, work experience, customer reviews, quality of work, etc. Whether you’re working with roofers or electricians, be sure they represent the workmanship and values you’ve worked hard to establish.

Choose Wisely

Part of the overall customer experience depends on what happens with your subcontractors. Subcontractor choice can make or break a job and your business. But if you carefully select your subs, your reputation can shine. On the other hand, if you lack due diligence in vetting them, or don’t properly follow up on their work, it’s possible for your subcontractors to damage your reputation.

If you want to gain a competitive edge, work with the best subcontractors in their respective fields — even if they cost a little more. After a meticulous selection process, make sure your subcontractors understand who you are and what you represent to your customers. The buck stops with you, so it’s important you’re all on the same page.

Subcontractors Reflect on You

In the end, the homeowner won’t really differentiate between you and your subs — for better or worse. In their eyes, the subcontractor is just a part of your business, not a separate entity. A high-quality subcontractor who “gets” your approach to business can really give you a competitive edge and distinguish your company.
